The guys might not be “Whistling” while they’re working the “Straits”.
This must be the year of the “Throwback”, if you don’t know what I mean just Google “Whistling Straits”.
It’s another “LINKS” style course for a major championship.
If you’ve read any of my blogs, you know I’m not a big fan of links-style courses, but, this one could be fun.
Even though there’s the lack of a “U.S.” “feel” to the track, it still looks well manicured for those that keep it in play with a more than fair test on the greens, which depending on the pin position, is going to offer some interesting reads/putts by the time Sunday rolls around.
The track is long, almost 7,800 yards with so many twists, turns and bunkers, (anybody have a Camel?). Plus, I love the name of the last hole, “Dyeabolical”. (For those that don’t get it, Pete Dye designed it).
Shotmaking is going to be a premium this week, probably more so than any of the other majors this year. I really think this course evens the field so the long hitters won’t have much of an advantage.
Most of the guys who’ve been around a while will remember, since it’s been host to the PGA before, but very interesting for the newcomers and “young guns”.
Although Jordan Speith has pretty much proven me wrong all year, I still can’t go with him as a clear cut front runner.
Zach Johnson is “hungry” again after winning the, (pardon me, “British”); and his mental toughness is about the same as the kids.
I also want to take a second to mention Steve Stricker. The tournament’s in his home state, but his putter has been so bad, (he has switched); and his caddie split earlier this year and back to his original, his wife, who looped for him his first five years on tour. Maybe that’s not a bad thing.
So who wins? Good luck… Dustin Johnson, please take a course in sales and learn how to close.
My trifecta would be, (and not in this order); Spieth, Jason Day and Louis Oosthuizen.
The latter has a gap that is perfect for “Whistling at the Straits”.
